When I first saw it many months ago, I thought, "Well, this will be dead soon!" Well, it's been doing great, even putting on new growth. So I studied it and copied it with a little different (3-sided) glass jar I've had laying around, and instead of putting a peace lily in it, I put a Sweetheart Ivy (Hedera helix) in it. My thought was that I always let ivys dry out too much and then lose them - this should resolve that problem and maybe I can even keep one awhile! It turned out very nice... But then I got to thinking what other plants would look nice and grow well this way. I thought about H. multiflora, which practically needs to be grown standing in water. I'd like to hear opinions on this. Here are the details of how this is done: You need a tall glass container. The bottom layer is about 3" of pebbles, 2nd layer is about 2" of charcoal (I washed it so it wouldn't filter black down onto the layer of pebbles), 3rd layer is 3/4" of sand, then the soil and plant. I'll post a pic (though it's not a great one...) of my finished jar. Denise in Omaha |
