I made my wick trays using cut pieces of PVC pipe for support under the grid. I bought the tool and cut the pieces but they never come out exactly even, they are still hard to cut, even with the special tool, and they also slide around if not weighted with water. So here is how I fixed the problem. I was outside with my dog and he found an old golf ball. I just happened to bring it inside, and just playing around, stuck it in one of the indentions in the tray. Then I put the grid on top and it was PERFECT. It was the exact height for what I needed. So my DH ordered me 100 balls off of ebay very cheap. There are 6 groups of indentions in the tray so I put the balls in the ends and in the two sets in the middle. They fit perfectly. They are the right height and they do not move around since they sit nested down in the indentions. This sure does beat cutting PVC pipe and it costs less too. So if you are going to use the light green trays for wicking (best place to get them is Parks Seeds), get you some golf balls and put the grid on top and you've got the perfect wick tray. And I didn't really need 8 per tray, I just used them because I had extras. I think 6 per tray would have been fine. Sometimes we use the dardest things for other purposes and this was one of those times. Jesse |
