I live in South China, Maine about 30 minutes from Belfast. I have a Rose of Sharon that has survived 2 winters here and looks like it will bloom again this summer. I bought it at Home Depot in the summer of 2004 and was told by the lady who sold it to me to mulch it really well and it should survive. I took her advice and put approx. 3-5" of much around the bush.
There is a lady down the road who has one that is white w/dark eye. her "bush" is about 6-8 feet high and 4' wide. It is beautiful when in bloom!!!!
The picture was taken last summer as mine started to bloom. Hope this helps and good luck!
