You sound like me and husband and the stuff we did with the kids, it was wonderful, DH said I don't want them remember the reason we can not do anything with them was because we, as parents are to busy spending money on a new toilet or any or new wall paper or the likes.
So we took them with us travling around here and abroad skiing, sledding , skating, staying at the beach, they now have wonderful child hood memories and are doing the same for their children.
I would have said good bye to a husband like your first one too.
