This is its fertile frond, the equivalent on this species of the brown fertile fronds on the Cinnamon Fern. These are wild ferns in my area, sharing space with Royal Ferns (Osmunda regalis), and my beloved Skunk Cabbage. Some people that have seen these on my property say that they get the creeps from the fertile fronds. I don't get the creeps from them, but I can see how someone would think they are a little scary. They are quite big and they poke out of the sterile fronds, reaching close to three feet tall.
