The rough looking outside of the dark brown pod cracks to reveal inner tannish colored capsules which hold the smooth, shiny, dark brown (almost black) seeds. One side of the seed is flat. Birds and small animals eat the seeds which are toxic to sheep. The toxin causes swelling in the ears as well as the head, jaudice, and death. Shown in April. |
