I’ve got what I think is a viburnum. It had beautiful fragrant flowers. A couple of years ago new shoots began grow around the base of the tree and are now flowering but they look and smell different. Most notably the new flowers smell AWFUL - like sewage.

Otherwise the new growth is virtually identical. Opposite pairs structure. The leaves are a touch more coarse in their veins. I’m attaching a pic of each flower and the base.

Is this a completely unrelated plant? Or some juvenile thing or horrific sci-if mutation?!?
