Both plants are in the Shawnee Park pinetum (conifer collection). This Olmsted-designed park was originally planted in 1893, and there are a handful of mature Pinus strobus and midlife Picea abies. We performed a rejuvenation of this collection in 2014 - installing more than 60 new plants - using mainly 8-9' specimen trees of a very broad range of species. After two good moist growing seasons sandwiched around a pretty severe winter, these trees are coning quite well. We lost one fat old Abies koreana, and just had severe deer rub damage on a Larix decidua. This Carolina Hemlock was the moose in the bunch, weighing in at 12' - soaking wet. |
