The spines on the stems, toothed leaflets and pinnate leaves seem to fit with Aralia spinosa. I don't know what those weird white things sticking up from the leaflets are; I didn't notice them until I looked at the photos.

Sally, I came across your article on A. spinosa, and I'm glad I did!
I'll have to think carefully about what to do with this volunteer if it is a "devil".
