I just came across this thread as I was searching for the coryphantha sunderlandii. I am the daughter of Harry and Viola Sunderland, of the former Sunderland’s Cactus Gardens in Alamo, Texas. My mother, Viola, actually discovered this subspecies with the shorter spines while collecting native plants in the brush country of Starr County, Texas. After submitting it to experts in the field, the plant was later named after her, as “coryphantha sunderlandii.” I remember the day she found it. The plant was propagated and sold at their nursery for many years. The first photo shows what the flower looks like, but this particular plant, which was not the original has both longer and shorter spines. The middle photo was taken by my father, Harry Sunderland, Sr., showing the sunderlandii plant growing in his cactus gardens in 2007. The third photo shows a cluster grown from a sunderlandii I purchased from J&J Cactus & Succulents, of Midwest City, OK.
