Beginner Gardening: Recently moved into new house, looking for design help, 3 by Johnsr40

The pictures show some type of ground cover that I am in the process of removing also. I would like ideas on different shrubs or perennials to plant. Also, I was thinking of a tree in the middle, but was not sure of what to plant. Thanks!!
