I will burn a little wood or debris in the grill every so often to place around them , natural habitat for these is often a burn or fire has happened , they like the potash minerals , so I am told ..
They also like the other plants up next to them . I presume when they grow bumped up against another plant it keeps them cooler , this species likes it that way , cooler ..
Have not tried Fleabane as of yet , but asters and grass like plants it seems to like for company
The only plant I get a lot of trouble from is the Milk Thistle . they are thug , not only will they crowd , they kill other plants , even a vigorous Cutleaf Coneflower rarely kills other plants here . although it to is difficult to contain here.
Older Daylily tolerate the Thistle plants , about all though , they kill almost all the others I have
