This was taken in AK at the very "tongue" (end of) the Exit Glacier--- the only glacier one can access by car--and along hike to get to this. Here, is the end of this majestic Glacier where it's melt becomes a trickle-- and then a stream--and then a river which, eventually, ends up in the sea. It is not a "cave" at all. it is a sort of "wash out" on the side of it as the Glacier melts. The blue color of the ice is due to the huge compression the ice experiences. I think it was awesome!! This was all taken in July, 2007. 1--Me at the "cave' 2--The worn our, dirty end of the Exit Glacier 3--My sister (who lives in AK) and our cousin's DH, from Latvia at the "tongue". 4--The trickles become streans--and the streams become small rivers... and---the rivulets from many glaciers join to become a wide body of shallow water.... 5--...which becomes a river and flows into the sea. #4 and #5 were taken from a small airplane we rented to fly over the glaciers... Talk about a humbling feeling.....looking down on all of this. |
