I never save the cane-stems. They get cut out and discarded.
The growing tips of the stems get re-potted to grow plants to share.
The Mama plant--now stripped of all glory--just grows back like a champ every year.
It does not bloom for me every year--but last year it did.

And--so it has been going for about 25-30 years. Still love it!
