I think the rings might protect the stalks if the pot fell over, too. That plant has five stalks coming this year! Here's my other plant just opening last March (single flower on the left). It's supposed to be Phaius Microburst 'Wild Thing' but turned out to be 'Octoberfest' instead. The first plant (in full bloom on the right) is the species Phaius tankervilleae.
