I know that we had the same problem with the tropical waterlilies that you are having. I came to the conclusion that the tropical waterlilies must taste better than the hardy waterlilies. Another thing - if you are using the unscented clay kitty litter to plant your waterlilies, the koi will go after the clay. They love clay. My fish are larger as well and are do not tear up my hardy waterlilies.
