Maureen - good luck with the whiskey barrels. Is there any reason you can't plant the clem's directly in the soil? You can save the metal barrel rings and make a few areas of mixed elements so you have a safe place to stand without stepping on any plants in your garden. Mine became valuable to me as the plants grew fast.
