clematis are my new passion. I too planted a Jackmanii bare root last year, and I got very little growth and only 2 flowers. This year, I had it next to 1 of the legs of my shade canopy over my potting area. It is on the east side of the house & gets full sun until about 1pm. The roots are in a 5 gal pot that is in full shade. It has been blooming for a couple of weeks now & the flowers seem to last forever!
I doubt very much that you will get an arbor covered in 1 year. Also, I have been reading about suggestions to plant clematis with something else because the clematis only blooms once or twice a year & on their own without flowers, there is not much to them.
