Eleven, try spraying with stuff that tastes bad to the critters. I have used bitter apple from the pet store/pet warehouse. If you spray it, use a mask or as I do, pull my shirt over my mouth. Nontoxic, I can't stand the taste on my hands or lips, either. I now use a different spray because it is not water soluble so it doesn't wash off in the rain, but I have to mix and spray according to directions. I use it primarily for lily beetles, but it works for everything as long as I can keep it up. It has a pleasant smell of cloves. Once it gets too hot or my back hurts, I'm stuck and they get to dine.

By the way, I'm still working on digging your lady's slipper soon as it dries up more.
