Texas Gardening: I just bought a dogwood tree and, 0 by steadycam3

I want to replace a red-tip photinia that the builder installed when he built my house in 1984. The trunk is about 5 inches diameter and it appears to have some sort of infestation. There are numerous pencil sized holes in the trunk about 2 ft up. I am concerned that the holes indicate some type of borer and I know that dogwood is often attacked by some type of borer as well. I am of course concerned that the borer will be the type that attacks dogwoods. Does anyone have any info to contribute that might help me sort this out?
