I check to make sure no animals have disturbed the boxes but they do not need watering since they are covered. All my iris seeds germinated, along with perennials. I uses Miracle-Gro topped with seeding mix. You can also mix your own with even amounts of peatmoss and perlite, or vermiculite. I use that in rooting cuttings.
