The West Indian Manatee is an endangered species so no contact is allowed, whether in the spring water or the river. Folks can and do canoe outside of the spring run in the St. Johns river and the Manatee's are always in the river during warm weather so you can view them from a canoe or boat. The river water is not conducive to snorkeling, because of the tannic acid the water is so dark you can't see anything. Many people snorkel and scuba dive in the spring run when manatees aren't present, there are lots of different fish that are even visible from the extensive boardwalk areas. We took our boat to the St. Johns river a few times years ago but I would never get in the water because there are lots of gators present in rivers and lakes here in Fla. My husband used to go water skiing and wake boarding all the time, but not me! I wouldn't even dangle my feet in that water, I don't want to be gator bait so my body stays in the boat! Oooh, love that Flame Vine! I know there are a couple of plants with that name but yours looks like Pyrostegia venusta: http://www.floridata.com/ref/p/pyro_ven.cfm Love your Koi Pond, very nice! Kay: I've rooted Hoya's and other vines that way ... remove a few leaves at the nodes and lay the stem on the potting medium so that the node area is in contact with the soil, and weigh it down with a rock. I've also used bobby pins or bent paper clips to press the stem to the soil. No blooms for me to show right now but I think Spring is on the way ... the Robins have arrived, and we only see them for a couple of weeks before they head back north! |
