I spent a few days this past week tracking down a rare visitor to my area, namely, the Harlequin Duck. Recent population estimates place the Pacific population at 1 million individuals and the Atlantic population at 11,000 breeding pairs. And, then they generally hang out along the coastal waters. This duck was over 100 miles inland, hanging out with some Buffleheads Canvasbacks and Ruddy Ducks. The adult male Harlequin is a beautiful duck that can't be mistaken for another. This one is an immature male Harlequin shot at 700mm. |
