Rye grass is quick, but I prefer grain rye (Abruzzie) for a winter cover crop. I plant around the first of October and plow down in March. Naturally I don't use it on plots planted to winter vegetables like collards, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, turnips , rutabagas, turnips and winter greens.
