Yes Karen, we do have piliated woodpeckers here in eastern Virginia. I often see and hear them. They prefer the deep woods but I have seen them in the open and even saw a pair in the trees behind our house, which is in a subdivision. They make quite a racket as they fly though the woods and the other birds move out of their way.

Here is the best picture I have taken of one thus far. It was taken several years ago. I was only about 10 or 15 feet from him and I could hardly hold the camera still..
