Beginner Gardening: Need help with over-wintering gardenia plant, 0 by gypsydream

I have a gardenia my best friend gave to me last spring. It was lovely and blooming through the summer. I brought it in when the weather began getting colder, and that's when the trouble started. I have it in an east window, but it doesn't get much sunlight, just light from a sun light bulb that I turn on my plants almost daily for a few hours. After bringing it in, it stopped blooming, and has now shed almost all of it's leaves. At this date there are far fewer leaves left than this picture shows. I'm thinking that perhaps this is a normal cycle for the plant since it has woody stems, but I don't know that for sure. If anyone can tell me (please!) if I'm guessing right, or if there is something else I should do for the plant to save it. Any help would be really appreciated, I don't want to lose this beauty!
