Grasmussen wrote: On Sunday we drove down to Portage Valley expecting to photograph eagles. Portage Valley is about 2/5,s of the drive from Anchorage to Seward where Ava lives. To our surprise winter had already arrive in the valley. A week earlier there had been a dozen eagles around the lake in this picture, but the rain was coming down nearly horizontally. The few pictures I snapped then were too blurred by the rain to keep! This time the lake was frozen solid with a solitary optimist refusing to leave. A late run of Silver Salmon attracts the eagles. As I was walking around the lake to get this picture, I encountered Black Bear tracks in the fresh snow. We still do not have any snow in Anchorage, unusual because winter normally arrives well before Halloween. |
