BTW, this is my first year on DG. I stumbled upon it by accident, also. I timidly joined the piggy swap last year, and I swear that I had not had so much fun in a long time. And I learned so much from everyone. I had never even considered planting seeds, much less saving them. Now I am addicted to seed saving. I cannot look at a pod without wanting to catch a few seeds. The pods are everywhere!! Go to a park or walk down the street. Usually if you ask, people will gladly let you take some of their seeds. I now keep envelopes in the car, just in case I meet a seed that wants to come home with me. So, don't let the Piggy Swap intimidate you. The plastic baggies are cheap and easy, homemade paper envelopes work just fine, as well. I made some of the envelopes, but I don't have the patience to make them look nice. I got so many seeds for the price of postage. When I look at all of the pretty flowers, I think of the person(s) who sent me the seeds. They are the seeds of friendship and they seem to even bloom better than a packet of seeds from the store. I wintersowed most of my seeds in milk jugs (first time) and planted them in the spring in my lazy version of a lasagna bed (one layer of Tagro over a layer of cardboard). Here is a picture. Have fun, and I hope to see you at the Piggy Swap trough. |
