Besides general appearance, two other facts about this bird confirm it is a red shouldered hawk. 1) It is a permanent resident. when I first posted I wanted to say it has been around FOREVER, but I incorrectly assumed they were migratory and "forever" had to be in my imagination. I wasn't crazy, this hawk has been in my wooded lot for years. 2) The distinct black/white markings on wings/tail. They can attack small mammals and I have a small dog and a rabbit, so I do need to be watchful. |
