DonnieBrook wrote: Howdy, Gang! I've been away for 5 days and I have to share a shot of my son's gigantic head of broccoli in his small veggie garden. This thing weighed almost 10 pounds! It is next to a "regular" sized head from another of his plants. We ate half of the Giant Guy last night for dinner and he gave the other half to neighbors who brought people over to see it a couple times while we were there. We got home late last night (phone was out and still is!) from the bad weather here while we were away. The grass is as high as an elephant's eye and the most exciting news ever is that the new Roundup I used did away with every gallant soldier.....at last!!! I really did hate using chemicals, but there was no drift onto my crops, thankfully! My garden looks pretty puny......broccoli's ok, potatoes seem ok, tomatoes and cukes are WAY behind and the peppers look pretty lame. Onions seem on track and the sunflowers are inching upwards. I now have 6 sections of the garden that are just sitting there empty. I looked at the maturity dates on several packets of seeds, and I think I'm not going to waste the effort in planting my zinnias and glads this year. I filled one section with lettuce today, but the chippies we have this year will probably have a feast. We'll have to find satisfactory diversions at our September gathering so you won't all be ashamed of my lame efforts in the veggie department this summer. |
