I used your cardboard/newspaper trick in a part along the one side of the Bathtub. The area under the pines has landscape fabric under them but the grass has encroached didn't want to plant in that area but didn't want to mow it either. When I dug out behind the bathtub I just used your method for the part where I wasn't planting to give a nicer mow line. In this pic you can see the area that was papered.
