The lights are adjustible, I do not need to raise the plants up or down. You just lower the lights if you like. That was one of the reasons I ordered these shelves. There are two on each level so it is bright, it needn't be very low.

Here is a picture I just took. There is a lot of room, the plants do not have to touch. I like a lot of air flow and the way you can easily see each one. You can't tell how many are on the top two shelves. Lots of mini's and young standards.
