First, it was dark and cloudy in the morning, so I didn't even try to take photos of the Oriole (hooded I think but no pic to verify), the male House Finch feeding a youngster, and a Yellow-breasted Chat. Then in the afternoon, I saw this Baltimore Oriole. He was too far for a good shot though. At least I got the "you can tell what it is" shot. That's what I'm posting. Then, the big heartbreaker, and it's all my fault, I thought it was just a Cardinal sitting in my neighbor's tree until a male Cardinal flew down next to it and they didn't fight. I looked through the binoculars. It had a red tail, red body but then I got to the head and it didn't have any black markings and no crest. It was a beautiful male Summer Tanager, just sitting there waiting to be photographed! I went into panic mode getting the camera. Of course, he flew off, and I didn't get a picture of my first ever Summer Tanager. This morning, I missed a Hooded Warbler and a Common Yellow-throat! These last two weeks of April are the best birding! |
