i'm having trouble germinating S tiliifolia too... only getting 1 seed out of 9 to germinate ... i can get them to swell up using a hot water soak... and then they eventually rot... i've even got them to produce radicals, but then the cotyledons rot inside the shell....
the only one that lived was a seed that arrived crushed... that just grew away without any help at all... but looks a total mess, even it's first leaves are all twisted... i'm glad i only try to germinate a couple at a time....

The S bereviensis grew away(4 out of 4) quite well with a hot water soak and placing the swollen seeds in a sealed plastic tub above a radiator and a little help getting out of their shells.... tha S macalusoi(1 out of 2) was even easier it didn't need any help at all....

i got the Operculina turpethum to germinate first time(2 out of 2), but not the M.vitifolia(0 out of 4)...... yet! :-)
