However.. If you have a goat that you got say from a rescue or something and have no lineage documentation but it looks like a pure something (for our purposes we'll say a LaMancha), you can get any member of the American Dairy Goat Assoc. to write a letter saying it looks like a LaMancha and it can be registered as a Grade-Native on Appearance. Then if you breed that goat to a registered LaMancha and then those babies get bred to a registered LaMancha, the third generation can be registered as full American LaMancha.

So you can use a "mutt" that looks proper and eventually upgrade your herd.
Just remember the CAE thing and get them tested before you go to all that effort.
