I have quite a few double tulips that have been performing well for me for 4-5 years now. 'Lilac Perfection' has even multiplied. Maybe benign neglect is the answer. They are in awful clay soil, although I did try to amend a bit when I planted. I try to remember to fertilize, but it's hit & miss. My 'Angeliques' are 5 yrs, not as pink as they once were, but still very nice.
