let's start with the 1" piece...easier to learn on it...

holding it with my 2 hands (braid going up and down as per photo)
I gently start to pull ever so softly to start giving it width using my fingers...little area at a time re width...working from top of the braid to the bottom of the 1" braid...

Don't have a photo of me doing it with the 1" piece but what I'm doing with the longer one is the same...see, not much width but I have gently worked it out just slightly wider than the original braid...
