I would think that if you grew them in a very large container with lots of humus/forest floor organic material you might have better luck than a nursery.

Water quality is an issue, city water is of low quality (for plants), saved rain water is best but presents its own issues and well water can be OK in most places.

I just stick with flowers for the most part, but, I do grow good tomato plants in earth boxes.
