So sad about your daughter's ankle, Peg. I hope she's feeling better. Clem, you should be able to keep a basjoo banana in the ground. I kept one over winter in the ground here (zone5), but it really struggled the next spring. I had to chop it back a little and protected it with leaves packed under a laundry basket.. The next year, (banana plant#2, I dug it up and attempted to keep in the basement... I don't think I watered it enough, or maybe there wasn't enough light..
I enjoy sharing, plant matter and what I've learned, so you guys feel free to get my attention, (bonnie@kanorado.com). I wish I could just garden at home and on play at Dave's.. but that doesn't pay the bills...lol I have missed everyone here. The blue tub pic was 2006..Here is a pic of the same plant, planted in the spot the little pond was in 2006 (pond behind chiminea) Fall of 06, I whacked the "tree" off at dirt level, it rooted in a bucket in the basment over winter. Spring 07 I gave the little preform pond away (I thought I was going to move and would get a "real" (bigger) pond, but I didn't).. so I planted the rooted "tree" in the existing pond hole. It didn't bloom until August, but it kept more of it's leaves (holes are from a hail storm) and took the heat better than the potted brugs, but didn't bloom as soon. In fall last year, I whacked it off at ground level again and attempted to over-winter the rootball in the ground (as an experiment).. not successful and now I have an ugly stump. If I put anymore in the ground they will first be in a drilled pot, then planted, enjoyed and dug in fall. The experiment brug is a pink noid and I named it Amanda's Pink Tree Brug. (in honor of our very own AmandaTaylor in TX) - she posted the original "I think I'm losing my brug" post and she didn't lose her brug. I do have a baby one rooted to replace the one I sent her that got stolen from her porch earlier this year. So anytime you wonder if I know something or had experience trying something new, just email me, I'll do whatever I can. And I want to express my appreciation for everyone sharing their knowledge, that and growing them is how I've learned so much about brugs. 9 years ago, I didn't know brugs existed. lol
I do know your anticipation of the Y and it's promise of buds and blooms. I go through it with each new brug I'm fortunate to acquire.
