It is done by qualified veterinarians under anethesia. The dogs are not in pain. The ears are then taped to train them to stand up straight. The ears need to "remember" that position. The length of time for this will vary from dog to dog. If you wish to show your dog, then they need to meet the specific requirements. Docking & cropping may not be everyone's choice, but I think its beautiful when done correctly.
