Pruning might not be your problem.
It could be any number of things re. poor results with your roses.
If you are growing Hybrid Tea roses they tend to be fussy.
If you buy cheap boxed/bagged/wax roses at local box stores you are getting very poor quality roses with chopped off root sysytems.
Roses are heavy feeders and like lots of water but do not like to be in standing water. They need to be fertilized monthly June - August.
