My recommendation to you is to not let them get rootbound and keep upsizing the container as soon as possible. Make sure that there is good drainage, and they are not sitting in water. I have many of my seedlings plunged in the ground so that the roots can grow out the drainage holes, and when they bloom, I repot them to 15-gallon containers. Here are some of my seedlings that are around three and a half years old. Many seedlings will "nub" for the first time. A "nub" is a fake infloresence, a stalk without buds, that causes the seedling to branch for the first time. This often happens at around three years old.
