Judy the roots would be the way to go on them. You don't have to wait until next year to get nice blooms. Some of the pics I have taken of TST have come out looking like a lighter form. I have seen some lighter white and some darker yellow too. I think it's like that over their whole distribution area, there will be variations. Butterflies of all kinds love the E. purpurea for sure. :-)
