That is SO interesting kennedy, I have never heard of anything like that. I do have two houses with holes that were chewed to make them larger but no secret back entrances. That is one smart bird - if a predator peeks in they have a second way out. I wonder if all Pygmy nuthatches do this or if that one was just an Einstein of the bird world. Yesterday I had an unexpected day off because the school I work in had to close to get some emergency plumbing work done. (no water - no school) That was such good luck as yesterday the chickadees left the nest! I missed the actual leaving but got some great shots of the babies peeking out of the box.
