The bottom has an outside ring that fills with food (the area covered with the red top) then there is a cup that the rod goes through that you fill with water to keep ant's out of the food. The top just snaps on and it has a molded perch that goes all the way around. I like feeders with perches. It is so easy to clean and I have never had an ant problem since I got this feeder. Mine only holds about 1 cup of feed.
