There is also many, some nicer, types of bamboo for a deck. If you do the Black Bamboo I'd recommend trimming most of the lower leaves and branches to expose the stems. I've seen Japanese Maples burn in a situation like that but they are nice. How about a Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) like the ones at English Bay. It'd do very well there.
