The dolly idea for moving the pots works with more than 1 person. As for plants - Black Bamboo is good but remember the height. There is also many, some nicer, types of bamboo for a deck. If you do the Black Bamboo I'd recommend trimming most of the lower leaves and branches to expose the stems. I've seen Japanese Maples burn in a situation like that but they are nice. How about a Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) like the ones at English Bay. It'd do very well there. There's also Phormium (New Zealand Flax) which can make a nice container plant.
