Janet - I grew my tulips in a pot with some Daffodils. I loved how they all looked together and got lucky and they all bloomed at the same time. (See attached photo.)

Magpye - It certainly does look like you have a butterfly zoo going on in your yard!!! I believe from your description of the black butterfly with the red stripe on it's wings, that it might be a Red Admiral Butterfly. Check out this thread for a photo of it posted by bsharf:
