On the other hand, you most certainly can keep them in containers and root prune. Lay your plumie on its side, pull it out of its container, saw off about a third of the root system, and then repot in the same container with fresh soil. Water with Superthrive or Vitamin B-1 to ease the transplant shock. Many gardeners in colder climates do this about every other year.
