It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or full sun preferring moist sandy soil. Wild Lettuce can be distinguished from other native Lactuca spp. by the color of its flowers, its achenes which have attached tufts of hairs and its non-hairy stems and leaves (although it does have scattered non-prickly hairs along the central vein on the underneath side of the leaves). The 1/4 inch across flowerheads are yellow and often tinted with red. They are hermaphrodite having both male and female parts and are pollinated by Insects attracting bees mostly. Goldfinches eat the seeds. Mammalian herbivores occasionally eat the stems and leaves. White-tailed deer and horses eat the tops off of mature plants; whereas, the cottontail rabbit eats the tender leaves of first-year plants.
