duckmother wrote: Thanks Pell, I agree they are beauties. lol Wallaby, I am glad that you got to experience a baby duck, even if for only a short time. I have had 13 or so ducks snuggled up next to me before. Once they think of me as Mom, I am...until they leave home. The female is more drab, of course, with a white tear drop shape around her eyes. I visit them everyday (even during the winter just in case some fly home, for a snack) and the newly released ducks will jump or fly out of the water, to eat with Mom (and Dad). They will hop up in our laps, eat, snuggle and stay with us for long periods of time, unless another person approaches and then it is back to the water. But, after 2 - 3 weeks, they will not get out of the water anymore. Afterwards, all of them will get close to us but stay in the water. Over the years, I have learned how to call just like a female (a squeal like whistle not a quack) so, in the spring, when they return home, I will call and about 15 females will return a call. Then here they come for food. Wow! What a sight. Here are a few older babies just hanging out with Mom |
